North Antelope Rochelle Mine in Wyoming, was the largest coal-producing mine in United States, producing approximately 57 million tonnes of coal and an estimated 76.5 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) in 2021. The North Antelope Rochelle Mine is owned by Peabody Energy Corp, and is due to operate until 2047. The second largest coal-producing mine with an estimated coal production of 51.1 million tonnes and an estimated 67.3 mmtpa of ROM, was the Black Thunder Mine located in Wyoming. The Black Thunder Mine is owned by Arch Resources Inc.
Antelope Mine located in Wyoming was the third-largest mine, the Belle Ayr Mine located in Wyoming was the fourth-largest mine, and the Caballo Mine located in Wyoming was the fifth-largest mine, with a total coal production of 19.7 million tonnes, 13.1 million tonnes and 12.6 million tonnes, respectively, in 2021. The Antelope Mine, the Belle Ayr Mine and the Caballo Mine had an estimated ROM production of 27.83 mmtpa, 12.94 mmtpa and 10.66 mmtpa respectively. The Antelope Mine is owned by Navajo Transitional Energy Co which is due to operate until 2028, the Belle Ayr Mine is owned by FM Coal LLC and the Caballo Mine is owned by Peabody Energy Corp which is due to operate until 2040.
The five largest coal mines, i.e., North Antelope Rochelle Mine, Black Thunder Mine, Antelope Mine, Belle Ayr Mine, and Caballo Mine, cumulatively produced approximately 153.5 million tonnes of coal, 195.24 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
