MC#1 Mine in Illinois, was the largest underground mine in United States, producing approximately 16.3 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) in 2021. The MC#1 Mine is owned by ACNR Holdings Inc. The second largest underground mine with an estimated 15.96 mmtpa of ROM, was the Sugar Creek Mine located in Missouri. The Sugar Creek Mine is owned by Eagle Materials Inc.
Bailey Mine located in Pennsylvania was the third-largest mine, the Marshall County Mine located in West Virginia was the fourth-largest mine, and the Black Otter Project located in Montana was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated ROM production of 14.29 mmtpa, 14.15 mmtpa and 13.33 mmtpa, respectively, in 2021. The Bailey Mine is owned by Consol Energy Inc, the Marshall County Mine is owned by ACNR Holdings Inc and the Black Otter Project is owned by Boich Companies LLC;FirstEnergy Corp;Gunvor Group Ltd.
The five largest underground mines, i.e., MC#1 Mine, Sugar Creek Mine, Bailey Mine, Marshall County Mine, and Black Otter Project, cumulatively produced approximately 74.03 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
