Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are one of the major causes of rising global warming and the Oil & Gas industry accounts directly & indirectly for one-third of the global emissions. CO2, Methane & NOx gases form a major part of greenhouse gases which are released by burning Oil, Fossil Fuels, etc. Due to rising GHG emissions from companies, it became important among major contributing sectors to report gas emissions during their operations.

Enbridge Inc (Enbridge) is an integrated energy company. It carries out natural gas processing, gathering, transmission, and distribution; transportation of crude oil; and marketing of petroleum products. The company also carries out power generation and transmission and has interests in renewable and alternative energy projects including wind, solar and geothermal, besides an offshore wind portfolio. Enbridge exports crude oil, liquids, and natural gas through its transportation system from Canada to the US.

Total GHG emissions reported by Enbridge in 2020 were 60.1 million tonnes CO2 equivalents (MtCO2eq), which declined by 7% from 2019. Enbridge’s GHG emissions have decreased continuously since 2018. The oil and gas company aims to achieve net-zero by 2050 in alignment with the goal of the Paris Agreement.

GHG emissions are generally classified into Scope 1,2 & 3 emissions. Scope 1 emissions are direct GHG emissions that occur from sources that are owned or controlled by the company, for example, emissions from combustion in owned or controlled boilers, furnaces, vehicles, etc. Scope 2 accounts for GHG emissions from the generation of purchased electricity consumed by a company. Scope 3 emissions form the major portion of total GHG emissions for Enbridge, accounting for 79% of total GHG emissions in 2020. According to Enbridge, Scope 3 GHG emissions result from its utility customers’ natural gas use, its employee business air travel, and electricity grid transmission and distribution loss (grid loss).

Enbridge is investing in renewable energies to reduce GHG emissions across the energy value chain and able to save more than 2 MtCO2eq per year since 2018. The company has a net renewable energy capacity of 2,075 MW by 2020 and has ongoing offshore wind projects in France.
