Saudi Arabia has highest share of 27% in the Middle East’s active refinery capacity in 2022 with a capacity of 3,325 mbd. The country is anticipated to have a minor capacity addition of 20 mbd in the Jubail II refinery during the 2022 to 2026.
Presently, Iran has 22% share in the Middle East’s active refinery capacity in 2022 with a capacity of 2,644 mbd. The country would witness capacity additions of 1,431 mbd from new build and expansion projects during 2022 to 2026. Siraf is the major upcoming refinery project in the country that is expected to start operations in 2025 with a capacity of 360 mbd.
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) accounts 13% of the total active (operational) refinery capacity in the Middle East. The country is projected to have refinery capacity addition of 278 mbd from upcoming projects during the outlook period. Ruwais is the major refinery project that is expected to have capacity addition of 203 mbd by 2026.
Iraq is the fourth-largest contributor to the Middle East’s active refinery capacity with 10% share in 2022. It would account of 26% of the total capacity additions in the Middle East by 2026.
Other important contributors to the Middle East’s active refinery capacity are Turkey and Kuwait with similar share of 6.7% and 6.6%, respectively. These countries are expected to collectively add a capacity of 643 mbd by 2026. Qatar is the other notable country contributing 3.6% share and 560 mbd of capacity additions by 2026.
