The Natural gas production of United States of America grew in 2020

North America natural gas production is forecasted to grow by 2025 from its current level, with US and Canada forecasted to grow by 2025, while Mexico production is expected to decline by 2025.

Majority of natural gas production growth will originate from unconventional gas basins in both US and Canada. Appalachia Basin accounts for a significant share of the natural gas production, followed by associated natural gas from Permian Basin.

In North America, natural gas supply far exceeds the demand, which enables the main producing nations, i.e., United States and Canada, to deliver their excess natural gas to other regions, mainly Asian countries such as China, Japan and South Korea which rely heavily on LNG. These exports from US to other regions has also grown in 2021 compared to 2019.

In United States, it is likely that future growth rate in natural gas demand will not return to pre-pandemic pace due to the increasing competition in power generation by renewable energy sources. Natural gas power generation accounts for a significant share in 2021 but will shrink down in 2025, while solar power will slowly take a bigger share in power generation capacity in 2025.

Canada’s natural gas production is forecasted to grow from 2021 to 2025 However, the growth in natural gas demand remains muted in the near term, while majority of the excess natural production is planned for liquefaction to increase Canada’s LNG export capacity.

On the other hand, Mexico will be suffering a decline in domestic natural gas production from 2021 to 2025. Demand for natural gas has been growing significantly in Mexico despite Covid-19 and this has meant an increase of imports from the US. In March 2021, Mexico natural gas imports reached a record high and has continue to surpass the 3-year historical range in May 2021. There is also additional planned pipeline capacity to send natural gas to the main centers of industrial demand.
