The second largest number of patents were held by Suncor Energy Inc with 372 Oil Sands patents. The third largest number of patents were held by Xyleco, Inc. with 271 Oil Sands patents. The fourth largest number of patents were held by Exxon Mobil Corp with 243 Oil Sands patents, of which 66.3% was contributed by ExxonMobil Upstream Research Co. The fifth largest number of patents were held by Murphy Oil Corp with 211 Oil Sands patents.
The top five patents holders, i.e., Shell plc, Suncor Energy Inc, Xyleco, Inc., Exxon Mobil Corp, and Murphy Oil Corp, together held 1,575 Oil Sands patents during the period.
