Although water is a basic requirement, millions of people worldwide do not have access to potable drinking water. Owing to population growth and erratic climate changes, this problem will worsen, leading to inconsistent and contaminated water supplies. To avoid such consequences and close the gap between wastewater and potable water treatment, highly efficient technologies must be developed and applied on a broader industrial scale. There is growing interest in the market, and investments in water and wastewater treatment increased. Demand for new water resources due to urbanization, safety concerns, and stringent environmental regulations and policies propel the market.

Cleantech Investments on the Rise

According to GlobalData, the US, China, Finland, Peru, and Mexico lead the world in water and wastewater management. In 2021, companies saw a 78% increase in capital offerings, with total capital raised amounting to $50.0 billion, mostly in debt offerings, followed by private equity and venture capital offerings.

The following are some of the recent activities in water and wastewater management:

  • In March 2022, Saudi Arabia announced 60 water projects worth SR35 billion ($9.33 billion) at the Mena Desalination Projects Forum 2022 in Abu Dhabi. These projects will increase the capacity for water desalination and wastewater treatment and increase strategic water reserves. Water projects worth $5.5 billion are already under construction through public-private partnerships.
  • In March 2022, DuPont Water Solutions (a subsidiary of DuPont de Nemours), located in Athlone, Ireland, announced a multi-million-euro investment in its Athlone facility. The Irish government supports the project, and Dupont will develop the project in partnership with Industrial Development Agency (IDA) Ireland. The facility at Athlone will invest in production technology to manufacture OxyMem Membrane Aerated Biofilm Reactor (MABR). The MABR uses the aerobic wastewater treatment method by oxidizing the pollutants. The investment will help meet the increasing global demand for MABR.
  • Heartland Water Technology, Inc., a provider of proprietary wastewater treatment technology and services for oil and gas E&P operations, landfill leachate control, electric power generation, and other industrial applications, raised $45 million in a venture financing round in February 2022. To extend this finance, the company issued equity securities to one investor.
  • Ionomr Innovations Inc., a company that develops and manufactures ion-exchange membranes and polymers for the hydrogen economy, raised $15 million in January 2022 in Series A funding round led by Shell Ventures and Finindus, joined by Chevron Technology Ventures (CTV), NGIF Cleantech Ventures, and Pallasite Ventures. The company will use the proceeds to scale its ion-exchange membranes and polymers that are fundamental to the acceleration of the hydrogen economy.
  • IS Dongseo Co Ltd, a company that manufactures and markets construction materials, in January 2022 agreed to acquire domestic waste company Environmental Energy Solution from E&F Private Equity Co Ltd for KRW91 billion. With this transaction, IS Dongseo will expand its business.
  • In January 2022, Liberty Utilities (Eastern Water Holdings) Corp, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Liberty Utilities Co. (Liberty), acquired New York American Water Company, Inc, a water services company, from American Water Works Company, Inc, a public utility company, for a purchase price of around $608 million.
