The growth of Global New investment in Nuclear (Power Generation) has gradually increased between 2017-2020.

Impact of COVOD-19 crisis on nuclear power generation segment

The novel coronavirus (COVID-19) crisis has led to a slowdown in the economic growth of countries across the world. The global pandemic has called for considerable measures to be taken in every aspect of life, including nationwide lockdowns, the use of PPE equipment, and social distancing to control the spread of the virus. Electricite de France (EDF) also withdrew its nuclear power generation target amidst an expected drop in its output this year due to the coronavirus outbreak.

Factors that increase the supplier power of nuclear plants

The need for specialized technological equipment such as power boilers and power transformers in thermal plants, rotor blades, and gearboxes in wind power, crystalline modules, and inverters in solar PV generation, or nuclear reactors in nuclear power plants, as well as turbine generators depending on the type of energy source, increases the supplier power of a few large industrial manufacturers in this field.

There are several different methods of developing mechanical energy to drive turbines and these vary by energy source: through the combustion of fossil fuels in fossil power generation where turbines are driven either by steam of water boiled by burning coal/oil in thermal power plants or by gas in gas-fired generation plants; through nuclear fission in nuclear power generation where turbines are driven by the steam produced; through water driving turbines in hydro and tidal power generation; through wind driving turbines in wind power generation; and in other renewable sources, through steam, either produced by geothermal power or generated by water boiled through burning biomass or through heating in solar thermal energy. Solar PV generation is the only main power generation technology that does not involve power generation through turbines, with manufacturers of photovoltaic cells and modules the most important suppliers in that field.

In fossil fuel and nuclear power generation, fuels are (the most) critical raw material inputs for players’ activities, accounting for the largest share of costs in power generation.

Who is the leading player in the nuclear power generation segment?

State Power Investment Corporation (SPIC), a merger of China Power Investment Corporation and State Nuclear Power Technology Corporation, is a state-owned power generator enterprise. The company operates power generation plants and offers hydro-power, thermal power, nuclear power, and new energy generation services. It is also involved in the research and development, design, construction, operation, and management of nuclear power projects.
