Power import in the US recorded a YoY growth in 2020

The US was a net importer of electricity from 2000 to 2020. In 2000, the country imported more electricity than it exported stood. In 2020 as well, electricity imports were higher than exports. The country imports electricity from Canada and Mexico. Electricity imports increased steadily from 2011 to 2013 due to major droughts in the country which impacted hydropower generation.

Supply Security

The US is actively involved in power exchanges with neighboring countries including Canada and Mexico. Power imports have increased steadily over recent years and in 2020, the country was a net importer. The US generates power from a diverse range of sources including coal, gas, oil, hydropower, renewable and nuclear power. Thermal is the main source of power generation, and the majority is contributed by gas-fired power plants. The discovery of shale gas reserves led to a decline in natural gas prices, which resulted in a shift from coal to gas-based power generation. The country also possesses substantial coal reserves. However, the role of coal in power generation is declining in favor of clean technologies, such as wind, solar, hydropower and nuclear power. The country is a leader in nuclear power generation. Hydropower generation in the US is not reliable since it is highly dependent upon the availability of rain and climatic conditions.

The US is among the leading carbon emitting countries in the world, accounting for low-double-digit percentage of global emissions per year. As part of steps to counter this, the US made rapid progress in renewable capacity expansion in the last decade and became a global supplier of renewable equipment. A range of market related, and policy driven factors also played a vital role in the country’s decline in net emissions from 2005 to 2019, according to Center for Climate and Energy Solutions. Though renewable power capacity will continue to grow in the country, the focus will be on gas-based generation, at least for the next decade.
