Power export in South Africa recorded a YoY decline in 2020

From 2003 to 2020, South Africa has been a net exporter of electricity. South Africa’s net electricity exports to neighboring countries have grown steadily since 2000. In 2000, South Africa imported more electricity than it exported. In 2020, the country imported less electricity than it exported.

Supply Security

South Africa was a net exporter of electricity in 2020. This is due to the decline in power demand because of slowing economy. Also, generation has fallen due to the need for frequent unplanned power plant maintenance. As a result, the net exports have declined between 2019 and 2020.

Renewable Energy Market in South Africa

South Africa has a huge amount of indigenous coal reserves and is among the world’s leading coal exporters. Its dependence on coal resources makes it one of the largest emitters of greenhouse gas (GHG). It is not dependent on imports for energy needs, and a significant share of its energy demand is met through coal. It is also a signatory to the Kyoto Protocol, and to fulfill its carbon reduction obligations the government is now focusing on increasing the share of renewable resources. The government has introduced various incentive plans such as Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Program (REIPPPP) to support renewable energy development, and the country has good renewable potential, especially in wind and solar power.
