Net electricity generated by Thermal power plants across the globe recorded a YoY decline in 2020
The global power generation industry grew moderately in the historic period, as attempts to conserve energy consumption and alter generation mixes in Europe were outstripped by growth in the Asia-Pacific region. The market is expected to continue growing moderately towards 2023, although growth rates will decelerate somewhat.
At present, fossil fuels remain the dominant source of power in the US. However, the make-up of the energy mix is changing. Coal is frequently being beaten by natural gas and insufficient time has passed to assess if the changes to coal written into law will have a meaningful impact. As costs for renewable energy fall and individual states increasingly take action on reducing carbon emissions, the shape of energy production will likely change further.
The UK is actively involved in power exchanges with several European countries although characterized with a rather unsteady power import pattern over the years. For power generation, the UK generates power from a diverse range of sources, including coal, gas, oil, hydropower, renewables, and nuclear power. Thermal power is its main source of power generation and gas-fired power plants constitute most of its thermal capacity.
The US is actively involved in power exchanges with neighboring countries including Canada and Mexico. Power imports have increased steadily over recent years and in 2020, the country was a net importer. The US generates power from a diverse range of sources including coal, gas, oil, hydropower, renewable and nuclear power. Thermal is the main source of power generation, and the majority is contributed by gas-fired power plants. The discovery of shale gas reserves led to a decline in natural gas prices, which resulted in a shift from coal to gas-based power generation. The country also possesses substantial coal reserves. However, the role of coal in power generation is declining in favor of clean technologies, such as wind, solar, hydropower and nuclear power.
