Heating, lighting, air conditioning, ventilation, cooking, and refrigeration are the main factors for direct energy consumption, and therefore carbon emissions, of a retail outlet.

GHG Emissions from Inditex

Inditex SA (Inditex) is an in-store and online retailer that designs, distributes, and retails apparel for men, women, and children. Its product portfolio includes clothing and leather garments and apparel such as designs and fabrics, lingerie, sweatshirts, t-shirts, jeans, and sports clothing. The company offers sheets, blankets, quilts, towels, tablecloths, bath linen, dishware, glassware, hygiene products, and home decoration objects and accessories. Inditex operates retail stores under various commercial concepts including Zara, Pull & Bear, Massimo Dutti, Bershka, Stradivarius, Oysho, Zara Home, Zara Kids, and Uterque.

The total GHG emissions (Scope 1 and 2) of Inditex in 2021 were 62.35 thousand tonnes of CO2 equivalents, a decrease of 43.6% over 2020.

GHG emissions are generally classified into Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions. Scope 1 includes direct GHG emissions from sources owned or controlled by the company. Scope 2 encompasses indirect emissions resulting from the generation of energy that the company purchases, such as electricity. Scope 3 involves other indirect emissions that relate to the emissions produced by Inditex’s entire value chain, such as the production and transportation of capital goods purchased, etc.

In 2021, Scope 2 emissions form the major portion of Inditex’s total GHG emissions, accounting for around 47.77 thousand tonnes of CO2 equivalent (76.62% of the total GHG emissions), a decrease of 51.6% over 2020. The company’s Scope 1 emissions (14.58 thousand tonnes of CO2 equivalent) increased by 22.9% over 2020. Here, total GHG emissions include Scope 1 and 2 only.

Scope 3 emissions of Inditex were 17,097.8 thousand tonnes of CO2 equivalent in 2021 and increased by 28.2% over 2020.

By 2040, Inditex commits to achieving net zero GHG emissions and by 2022 to achieve 100% of the energy used at its own facilities from renewable sources.
