Inditex, a Spanish apparel company, opened 226 new stores and closed 578 existing stores resulting in net store closings of 352 in 2021, similarly, the company also closed around 640 stores in 2020. Inditex owns and operates brands like Zara, Pull & Bear, Massimo Dutti, Bershka, Stradivarius, Oysho, and Uterque. Zara, the fashion brand, is the moneymaker for Inditex, with nearly 70% of its total sales in 2021 generated from Zara.
In 2021, the 352 stores closed owing to the decrease in store traffic caused by the spread of the Omicron variant and restrictions in most markets, and lockdowns in Austria, The Netherlands, Germany, Japan, China, and the Philippines. Of the 352 stores shut by Inditex in 2021, Zara reported the closing of 86 stores.
By the end of FY2021, Inditex operated 6,477 stores, down from 6,829 operational stores in 2020. Of the 6,477 stores in 2021, Zara had the most retail space with 1,939 stores, followed by 971 Bershka stores, 915 Stradivarius stores, 864 Pull & Bear stores, 682 Massimo Dutti stores, and 556 Oysho stores.
In 2021, nearly 83.6% of the total stores were company-operated stores, while the rest were franchised stores. In terms of sales, company-operated stores generated nearly 86% of the total sales in 2021. Although revenue generated from store sales makes up 74.5% of the total sales, online sales for Inditex grew by 14% year-over-year in 2021 to reach EUR7.5 billion.
