Jeronimo Martins SGPS SA (Jeronimo) is involved in the production, distribution, and sale of food and fast-moving consumer goods. It operates through multiple store formats such as supermarkets, hypermarkets, cash and carry stores, and pharmacies. It operates these stores under various brands such as Pingo Doce, Biedronka, Hebe, Ara, Hussel, Jeronymo and Recheio. The Polish food store chain Biedronka is their largest business. In Portugal, Pingo Doce is the supermarket segment leader while Recheio leads the cash and carry market. In Colombia, they own the Ara chain of discount stores. They also develop an agribusiness operation in Portugal to ensure direct access to the supply sources of strategic products. In Poland, they own the Hebe beauty store chain. In FY2021, the group added 286 stores bringing the store count to 4,825.
In FY2021, the Group recorded sales of EUR20.9 billion up by 8.3% YoY of which 70% was contributed by Biedronka. This was due to the firm’s commitment to providing quality products at low prices to consumers. A good sales performance in all business areas was combined by careful margin mix management and increased cost discipline, to mitigate the pressure of the sales tax introduced in January 2021 in Poland, recover operating leverage in Portugal, and make significant progress towards profitability in Colombia.
Biedronka had a total of 3,250 stores in FY2021 with 164 openings and 334 refurbishments. It had 2,185 stores with self-checkouts, 499 stores with meat & delicatessen counters, and 14 micro-fulfillment centers of the Biek brand online. In FY2021, sales amounted to EUR14.5 billion, up 8.0% YoY. This was due to the maintenance of driving basket inflation to remain below the average food inflation observed in the country during the year and the ease of restrictions following the pandemic.
Pingo Doce had a total of 465 stores which opened 14 new additions and 15 refurbishments in FY2021. It also inaugurated its first standalone restaurant at CUF Tejo Hospital. Pingo Doce also expanded its e-commerce coverage by partnering with the Mercadão platform (recently acquired by Glovo) and launched an online store for non-prescription medicines, a store dedicated to pet products, and another to wine offer. Sales for FY2021 were EUR4 billion, a growth of 4.6% increase YoY compared to the previous year.
Recheio had a total of 42 stores by the end of FY2021. Rocheio’s sales were up by 7% YoY in FY2021 which was driven due to recovery of its HoReCa channel in the latter half of the year as pandemic restrictions eased on hotels, restaurants, and coffee shops.
Ara had 819 stores with 157 new openings in FY2021 surpassing target expansion during the year. The sales figures also surpassed the EUR1 billion barrier for the first time with a growth of around 30%. Its sales growth was a result of the lifting of restrictions and the increased movement of people.
Hebe had a store count of 291 with 25 new openings in FY2021. During the year, Hebe launched 119 Hebe branded products. The sales amounted to EUR278 million, up by 13.5% in FY2021 compared to FY2020 YoY. The sales performance was improved by the execution of the digital and omnichannel strategy while progressing with its online operations.
