eBay, the online marketplace platform, reported a net income of $13.6 billion in 2021, an increase of over 140% as compared to a net income of $5.7 billion in 2020.
eBay runs its business by facilitating the business-to-consumer (B2C) and consumer-to-consumer (C2C) sales, eBay generates its revenue by charging a fee or taking a percentage of the transaction completed on its website and mobile application. It acts as a facilitator between businesses and consumers, without physically owning the inventory it sells on its platform, thus eBay is an asset-light business model. The revenues are driven by the number of transactions done on its platforms.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, billions of people flocked to shop online rather than shopping in person. This led to an increase in e-commerce businesses and eBay benefited from this tailwind. eBay had 147 million active buyers and 17 million sellers in 2021, leading to more online transactions.
eBay experienced a growth in the Gross merchandise volume (GMV) of categories like sneakers, luxury watches, and luxury handbags. In 2021, in addition to the increased GMV, eBay also managed to migrate its customers and sellers to its new end-to-end payments platform resulting in more revenues and thus resulting in a more profitable fiscal year.
