El Puerto de Liverpool, S.A.B. de C.V. (Liverpool) is an omnichannel retail group that operates in the retail, financial, and real estate industries. It also holds a 50% stake in Unicomer, a company that has retail chains in 27 countries of Latin America. The Liverpool group operates a chain of department stores engaged in selling a variety of products such as clothes and accessories for men, women, and children, household goods, furniture, cosmetics, and other consumer products. In FY2021, Liverpool shut one store bringing the total count of stores to 314 from 315 in FY2020 YoY. In FY2017, it added a net of 139 stores due to the acquisition of Suburbia Clothing in its chain bringing the store count to 282 from 143 (in FY2016).
As of FY2021, the Company operated 314 stores of which a total of 122 department stores were under the Liverpool name; 116 specialty boutiques and 164 stores with the Suburbia name, and 28 Galerías shopping centers. In FY2021, 7 department stores began operations under the name of Suburbia (in Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua; Villahermosa, Tabasco; Los Reyes Tepozán, Estado de México; Puerta Aragón, Ciudad de México; Ecatepec, Estado de México; Naucalpan de Juárez, Estado de México; Tenaria, Ciudad de México), and 1 department store with the Liverpool format (in La Perla Zapopan, Jalisco). In FY2020, 9 stores began operations, with the name of Suburbia (in Tláhuac, Ciudad de México; Tlalnepantla, Estado de México; Guadalajara, Jalisco; San Miguel Cuautitlán, Estado de México; Tizayuca, Hidalgo; Zitácuaro, Michoacán; Rosarito, Tijuana Baja California; Saltillo, Coahuila; Culiacán, Sinaloa).
In FY2017, the total store count increased from 143 in FY2016 to 289 stores. This was a result of the acquisition of a highly successful clothing store chain Suburbia in April 2016. The group added two new stores of this format, bringing the total to 124 Suburbia stores. Also, 11 new Liverpool stores were added during the period.
Liverpool’s consolidated revenues were 30.8% higher in FY2021 compared to FY2020 YoY. In the retail segment, their revenues grew to 35.5% higher in FY2021 than in FY2020. In same-store terms, Liverpool grew 35.5% over the previous year, while Suburbia reported a 49.1% increase in FY2021. By the end of FY2021, since all the stores were open, most of the income was generated in the stores, thus reaching the income that they had before the pandemic.
Apart from physical stores, digital operations added to the continued posting of solid performance by Liverpool. Digital sales grew 4.7% YoY in FY2021, while digital sales accounted for 22.6% of total sales in FY2021.
