X5 Retail Group NV, one of Russia's leading food retailers operates through a variety of retail formats including proximity stores, supermarkets, online retail channels, hypermarkets, and convenience stores. Its key business units include Pyaterochka proximity stores, Perekrestok supermarkets, Chizhik hard discounter stores, and Karusel hypermarkets. Their digital businesses include express delivery, Vprok.ru Perekrestok, 5Post, Mnogo Lososya, the food.ru media platform, and X5 Bank. At the end of FY2021, X5 added a net of 1,414 stores and was operating with 19,121 retail stores, five large dark stores, 31 small dark stores, and 47 distribution centers in 67 regions across seven federal districts in Russia. X5 also operates its distribution centers in the Central Federal region, Volga Federal region, Ural Federal region, North-Western Federal region, and Siberian Federal region across Russia. They are also one of the top players in e-grocery which is a rapidly expanding segment defined by fierce competition from online ecosystems and marketplaces. The company’s operations are spread in the Netherlands and Ukraine. X5 is headquartered in Moscow, Russia.
As of FY2021, X5 had 19,121 retail stores based in the federal districts of Russia. The group had 9,179 stores in the Central and Northwestern region, 4,895 stores in Volga, 1,672 stores in Ural, 1,951 stores in the Southern region, 388 stores in North Caucasus, and 1,036 stores in Siberian districts.
As of FY2021, express delivery service was available from 1,611 stores (923 Pyaterochka stores, 30 Pyaterochka dark stores, 655 Perekrestok supermarkets, and 3 Karusel hypermarkets) in 50 regions, compared with 992 stores and 13 regions in FY2020.
5Post is a last-mile delivery service that enables e-commerce providers and other X5 digital businesses to deliver goods to parcel lockers, cashier desks, and/or pickup points located at X5 stores. As of FY2021, 5Post had 22.6 thousand pickup points in 17.3 thousand locations across 66 regions of Russia, and the business unit delivered a total of 27 thousand orders during FY 2021.
Vprok.ru Perekrestok is an online hypermarket that had five large dark stores and operations in three cities in FY2021, Vprok.ru Perekrestok handled 4.7 million orders in FY 2021, with more than 22 thousand orders being delivered on peak days.
Pyaterochka operates conveniently located proximity stores and is Russia’s largest food retailer on a stand-alone basis, with 17,972 stores and net retail sales of RUB 1.8 trillion in FY 2021. Pyaterochka had 47.1 million loyal customers in 2021 and serviced on average 13.8 million customers every day.
Perekrestok is the largest supermarket business in Russia, with 990 stores as of FY2021 and net retail sales of RUB349 billion for FY 2021.
Chizhik is X5 Group’s new hard discounter format and was operating 72 stores as of FY2021, with net retail sales of RUB2.9 billion for FY 2021.
Karusel operates compact hypermarkets that are usually within city limits. With the development of e-commerce businesses in Russia, much of hypermarkets’ non-food space has become obsolete, and customers are opting to do more of their food shopping locally. In FY2019, X5 Group decided to downsize the format by closing and/or transferring suitable stores to Perekrestok management. Karusel operated 33 stores by the end of FY2021.
