Facebook (Meta) is the most popular and used social media application worldwide with nearly 2.9 billion monthly active users (MAUs) on its platform. The number of monthly active Facebook users was nearly 360 million in December 2009, but by September 2012, the platform crossed the 1 billion monthly active users mark. It took Facebook approximately another 4 years and 9 months to add another billion users and surpass the 2 billion monthly active users mark. Facebook is almost nearing the 3 billion users mark, with 2.93 billion MAUs in March 2022.

From October 2009 till the end of March 2012, the European region has the greatest number of Monthly Active Facebook Users. But from April 2012, the Asia-Pacific region recorded the greatest number of Monthly Active Facebook Users. Since 2012, Facebook witnessed such exceptional growth in the number of Monthly Active Users in the Asia-Pacific region, that the region contributed more than 1 billion monthly active users by the end of June 2019. Users in India, Vietnam, and Bangladesh represented the top three sources of user growth by the end of 2021.

But in terms of revenue generated from each user, represented as Facebook’s Average Revenue per User (ARPU), the two countries: the United States of America and Canada are the major contributors, due to the size and maturity of these online and mobile advertising markets.

Facebook defines a monthly active user (MAUs) as a registered and logged-in Facebook user who visited Facebook through their website or a mobile device or used their Messenger application (and is also a registered Facebook user), in the last 30 days as of the date of measurement. MAUs are a measure of the size of the global active user community on Facebook.
