Global Mobile ARPU Trends (2017–2021, $ per month)

  • The global ARPU in 2021 increased to $1,061 per month from $1,018 per month in 2020
  • Mobile ARPU from Europe, the Middle East & Africa, and Asia-Pacific accounted for around 82% of the global ARPU
  • Europe ranked first with a mobile ARPU of $374 per month

In recent years, mobile average revenue per user (ARPU) globally registered growth due to greater use of voice and data services on mobile phones.

Mobile ARPU from Europe, the Middle East & Africa, and Asia-Pacific accounted for around 82% of the global ARPU. Among all regions, Europe ranked first with a mobile ARPU of $374 per month, followed by the Middle East and Africa with a mobile ARPU of $296 per month. Asia-Pacific came third with a mobile ARPU of $202 per month in 2021.

The global ARPU in 2021 increased to $1,061 per month from $1,018 per month in 2020, registering an increase of 4%. The increase was aided by higher demand for voice and data services from consumers as the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic spurred the use of digital means for connectivity instead of offline mode. The rapid increase in digitization and the growth in demand for digital entertainment increased the demand for mobile data services, which enhanced the revenue of telecom companies.

However, the CAGR of global ARPU for 2017–21 stood at a negative 2.37%.

The mobile revenue of telecom companies globally increased 6% in 2021 to reach $816 billion owing to an increase in consumption and the number of subscribers. This was the result of the rollout of 5G services in many countries, along with the development of telecom infrastructure.

The mobile subscriber base globally grew at a CAGR of 9.6 % during 2017–21. Such an increase in the number of subscribers aided the growth of mobile ARPU globally.

The major telecom companies globally include AT&T, Verizon Communication, and China Mobile. China Mobile, which registered a revenue growth of 18.5% YoY in 2021, was ranked first in the APAC region, according to GlobalData. This was because of the expansion of its “Customer, Home, Business, New” (CHBN) markets, increased sales of data, information and communications technology services, smart home services, digital transformation, mobile cloud, and digital content.
