Asia-Pacific continued to dominate the telecom space as it remained the market leader in both fixed-line and mobile network segments.

In 2021, Asia-Pacific registered an 11% increase in the number of subscribers for mobile connections, with a total subscriber base of 2,755 million. Consequently, the region recorded revenue of $318 billion in 2021, which increased 5% over that of the previous year.

The mobile average revenue per user (ARPU) for Asia-Pacific in 2021 stood at $202 per month, which increased 6% on account of an increase in the number of subscribers and the demand for voice and data services, following the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. The rollout of attractive plans by companies to increase the demand among consumers also aided the growth of ARPU. An increase in the consumption of digital entertainment by users propelled the demand for mobile data services. The growth in the subscriber base of 5G services also gathered momentum as telecom companies are developing infrastructure for the rollout of 5G services across the region.

China has been at the forefront of the deployment of 5G services and has been using these services for commercial operations since 2020. This development increased the mobile ARPU of the companies, which increased their revenue.

The major telecom companies in Asia-Pacific with the highest mobile ARPU include China Mobile, China Telecom, China Unicorn, and Bharti Airtel.

According to Global Data, China Unicorn and Bharti Airtel registered 22.8% and 4.3%, respectively, growth in mobile ARPU on a year-on-year basis.
