The marginal increase in mobile ARPU was due to an increase in the number of mobile subscribers and increasing use of data and voice services by users, which increased the ARPU of telecom companies.

The rapid increase in digitization and growth in demand for digital entertainment increased the demand for mobile data services, leading to growth in the revenue of telecom companies. The mobile revenue of telecom companies in Canada grew 6% in 2021, with total revenue reaching $16,312 million on account of increased consumption during the COVID-19 pandemic. The mobile subscriber base grew at a CAGR of 5.7% during 2018–21, which aided growth in mobile ARPU.

The major telecom companies in Canada include Rogers Communications, Bell Canada, and Telus Corporation. In the earnings announced recently, Rogers Communications and Telus Corporation registered growth in revenue due to an increase in the number of subscribers as the Covid-19 pandemic restrictions gave impetus to the internet demand among users. Moreover, Telus Corporation’s growth in the number of subscribers was aided by new offerings and loyalty programs by Telus. Mobile ARPU of Rogers Communications stood at $58.83 in 2021. At the same time, Bell Canada recorded an increase in mobile ARPU at $57.66 in 2021, with a number of customers added to the subscriber base. Bell Canada has also been at the forefront in the launch of 5G Services across Canada.

Furthermore, consumers’ demand improved as they become digitally savvy.
