The Total pay-tv revenues of the Telecom industry in the United States of America continues to decline in 2020

The total pay-tv revenues of the Telecom industry in the United States of America has declined significantly between 2017-2020, the pay-tv revenues recorded a single-digit YoY decline in 2020.

Pay-tv accounts refer to the number of accounts in a given country at the end of the year that subscribes to fixed TV service (either via cable, MMDS, Satellite/DTH platform, or IPTV) with at least one television set.

The Total pay-tv revenue is calculated in the Pay-TV markets by estimating the total revenues generated each year by service providers in a given country, it includes Pay-TV markets (both fixed and mobile).

COVID-19 and Pay-Tv revenue in the US

The arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 has contributed to transforming the way video entertainment services are consumed across the world. Although still highly relevant, the traditional pay-TV market will stay under strong competitive pressure from OTT video alternatives. This trend will intensify in the coming years as broadband services become more prevalent across the world.

Over the next five years, it is expected that the total number of pay-TV subscriptions globally to expand.

Pay-Tv service in North America

In a bid to slow down ongoing cord-cutting trends and boost service ARPU, operators in North America have been pushing the adoption of higher-priced pay-TV packages with a greater number of HD/4K channels, add-on extra packs of channels, and access to SVoD services. Operators in the US and Canada are enhancing their traditional pay-TV packages with OTT add-ons, both directly and through partnerships with third-party providers.

Pay-TV service adoption in North America has been declining over the last several years as a result of customers swapping their traditional pay-TV subscriptions for OTT video alternatives, a trend known as cord-cutting. It is estimated that during 2021 alone, the pay-TV penetration of households in the region will drop by a mid-single-digit percentage points. This trend will continue over the forecast period with the US and Canada losing pay-TV accounts between 2021 and 2026.
