The Mobile internet subscribers of Telecom industry in China recorded a single-digit YoY growth in 2020

The mobile internet subscribers of Telecom industry in China has grown significantly between 2017-2020, the mobile internet subscribers recorded a single-digit YoY growth in 2020.

Number of active mobile subscriptions or SIMs subscribing to a data package, either through a prepaid or postpaid plan, at the end of every calendar year. Typically, a subset of total handset and total connected mobile data device subscriptions.

Why mobile internet is not preferred in China

Voice subscriptions was the most successful segment of Wireless Telecommunication Services market in 2020. As consumers were forced to stay and work from home due to the coronavirus pandemic, they had to use their mobile phones to communicate, due to the lack of fixed line telephones. Voice contracts have been proven to be cheaper than fixed line contracts, increasing the subscriptions for the segment in 2020. On the other hand, consumers would rather use fixed line internet services rather mobile data services, due to the improved reliability and speed. This kept demand for data subscriptions at relatively low levels.

Rivalry in the Chinese mobile internet market

Rivalry in the Chinese market has been mandated by government policies that forced the reduction of tariffs to increase the penetration of 4G mobile internet services. Tariff reductions implemented during 2015–2016, such as the policy of forward-transferring unused data allowance, instructed by the Chinese Department of Telecommunication Development, the removal of domestic long-distance roaming charges, the lowering of internet tariffs for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), and the reduction of international voice tariffs, have increased competition among providers.

As the voice service segment of the market is saturated, players will focus on the surging demand for mobile internet. Accordingly, the improvement of economies of scale is vital to achieve greater profitability given the increasing competition on data allowances. In this regard, the profit margin of China Mobile is much larger than that of its rivals, however, it has lost market share in recent years. China Telecom has managed to constantly increase its share in recent years. On the other hand, China Unicom has seen its market share decline since 2014. China Unicom was the first mobile network operator in the country to provide unlimited data plans on nationwide basis, hoping to increase its market share and achieve better economies of scale.
