Rex, a regional airline in Australia, said that the introduction of electric and hydrogen-powered aircraft in the future will result in operating expenses for short flights falling by as much as 50%.
As announced on October 20, 2022, Rex intends to begin testing early in 2024 using Saab 340 aircraft that have been modified with new powertrains. In addition to lowering prices and increasing the frequency of service, lower operating costs will allow airlines to open additional routes that would not be feasible with turbine engines. The modified aircraft are best suited for hour-long flights such as Sydney to Wagga Wagga. The total operating expenses borne by Rex increased significantly in the first half of 2022 over that in the first half of 2021, according to GlobalData.
In July 2022, Rex announced a collaboration with drivetrain manufacturer, Dovetail Electric Aviation. At the time, Dovetail said that it expects to obtain certification for the modified aircraft in four years. On longer regional flights, Rex, formerly known as Regional Express Holdings Ltd., will continue to operate Saab 340 turbine-powered aircraft.
