Global Airlines Industry

The airlines industry comprises passenger air transportation, including scheduled flights but excluding air freight transport. Industry volumes are defined as the total number of seats sold by airlines registered within the specified country or region. Industry value is defined as the total revenue obtained by airlines from transporting passengers, calculated by applying the average revenue per passenger and applying this to a number of seats sold. All market data and forecasts are represented in nominal terms (i.e., without adjustment for inflation) and all currency conversions used in the creation of this report have been calculated using constant 2020 annual average exchange rates.

COVID-19 leaves a huge impact across sectors globally

The coronavirus pandemic caused a huge impact on all sectors globally and the airline sector was no different. The pandemic has made travelling difficult with the border closures and travel restrictions across the globe. As a result, the impact on airlines was such that the seats sold, load factor and revenue decline were like never before. Few airline companies (LATAM, Avianca Peru) filed for bankruptcy protection, and many were on the verge of ceasing of operations. With international travel bans in place, the FSCs were affected more than the LCCs, with a huge slump in demand and most of them had to cut down their capacities in 2020.
