Global Airlines

The airlines industry comprises passenger air transportation, including scheduled flights but excluding air freight transport. Industry volumes are defined as the total number of seats sold by airlines registered within the specified country or region. Industry value is defined as the total revenue obtained by airlines from transporting passengers, calculated by applying the average revenue per passenger and applying this to a number of seats sold.

Impact of COVID-19 on the Global Airlines Industry

The global airlines industry declined very strongly in the historic period due to a huge decline caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The industry is expected to recover strongly with growth in the coming years, with further strong growth following this in the forecast period. Unlike many other countries, the domestic segment has the highest volume in the US industry. Firstly, the US is a vast country and traveling from city to city is easiest and fastest by aircraft. Furthermore, the growth of domestic tourism has been supported by various state-level tourism campaigns. The pandemic has forced those who may go abroad to stay in the US, meaning domestic flights have not suffered as much. Canada and Mexico also have strong domestic segments due to the large size of the countries and popularity of domestic tourism. Additionally, with complications regarding traveling abroad, with the need for tests and vaccines, domestic demand is likely to recover more quickly.
