COVID-19 impacts in the travel and tourism segment in France
Following moderate growth between 2017 and 2019, the French travel and tourism industry fell into a steep decline in 2020 amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The industry looks set to recover and grow at a healthy rate over the forecast period. In March 2016, the government launched the ‘Destination Paris’ campaign, after consulting industry professionals to determine how to increase the influx of tourists visiting the country following the terrorist attacks. The government decided to increase security measures to encourage tourism and signed an agreement with China under which the police forces of both countries agreed to patrol key destinations in Paris during vacations and holidays. Government initiatives such as this helped to drive growth prior to the pandemic, particularly after safety concerns were elevated in response to the Charlie Hebdo attack in Paris in January 2015.
