Roscosmos’ ISS announcements do not constitute a change of policy from Russia, says GlobalData

Following new comments made by Yuri Borisov, head of Roscosmos, regarding the future of Russian involvement in the International Space Station (ISS);

Harry Boneham, Aerospace Analyst at GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company, offers his view:

“The future of the ISS has attracted much attention since the onset of the conflict in Ukraine, with the orbital station centering in a rhetorical battle between Russia and the West. However, regardless of the politics, the announcements from Roscosmos do not constitute a change of policy from Russia.

“While some partners, including the US, have signaled their intent to extend the agreement—which involves ceasing operations in either 2028 or 2030—Russia has not assented to these plans and continues to work to the original 2024 deadline. Therefore, the statements from Roscosmos can be seen as political rhetoric rather than a change in policy.”
