May’s light vehicle sales have now been reported for all global markets. They show a 36.2% year-on-year increase, which was not unexpected due to the impact COVID-19 had on the prior year’s sales. For the second consecutive month all major regions contributed high double-figure gains. Despite the positive year-on-year gains it was largely a disappointing month for sales. On the back of May’s sales GlobalData’s forecast for the year has been downgraded to 85.5m, a 13% increase on 2020 but 4% lower than 2019’s total. We anticipate that June will be the final month of double-digit year-on-year gains. Initial reports for June's sales – without China's contribution – indicate that sales were up some 14% year-on-year.
