Raw materials producers for this market are predominantly global giants. These mainly consist of petrochemical giants and leading metals and mining companies due to the scale required for successful operation. 

The raw materials used during the production process can largely be divided into three distinct categories: metals, non-metals and petrochemicals 

The first segment mainly contains platinum. Platinum is used in the manufacture of nitric acid, which in turn is used to make ammonia before being made into fertilizer. The metal is also commonly used in the production of plastics, synthetic fibers, drugs and pharmaceuticals, as well as many everyday products purchased from leading retailers. 

Chemical producers sell their own products but some specialize in selling generic chemicals no longer under patent 

Chemicals have a wide variety of functions and come in many different forms. Chemicals are used to manufacture fertilizers, detergent, toothpaste as well as numerous industrial processes.

The extent to which manufacturing companies are dependent upon chemicals for industrial processes critical to everyday products is hard to overstate. Whilst manufacturers are always keen to keep costs down, something which has been helped by consolidation in the chemical market of late, quality and control remain essential. For instance, ethylene is used extensively in packaging. Companies cannot afford for packing to degrade and risk products being damaged in transit from a factory to the end-user. 

Consumer Goods Companies dominate the retail market, leaving large retail chains dependent upon them 

As was demonstrated in the dispute between Unilever and Tesco during late 2016, during which some products were withdrawn from the shelves of stores, consumer goods companies hold the greatest degree of power of the sale of many products originating from the chemicals market. However, the dispute also showed the mutually dependent relationship consumer goods companies and large retail stores have.
