Industrial Machinery: Digitalization at the forefront of change
Digital technologies are continuously changing the way companies operate
New and innovative digital technologies are changing the way businesses operate in nearly every industry across the globe, with few being transformed as thoroughly as industrial machinery, where these technologies are not merely changing the way products are sold, but how companies operate. The phenomenon, also known as the Fourth Industrial Revolution (Industry 4.0) is the ongoing automation of traditional manufacturing and industrial practices, using modern smart technology. Digitalization is being implemented by manufacturers to improve their products and services, as well as to advance customer experience through various ways including analytics and automation.
Digitalization transforms company from manufacturer to service provider
Kaeser Kompressoren is one of the world's leading manufacturers and providers of compressed air products and services. Established in 1919 as a machine workshop, the company currently operates two manufacturing sites in Germany and employs approximately 7,000 people worldwide. The air compressor industry is characterized by strong competition and has undergone significant changes over the last three decades. In response to shifting customer demands, Kaeser has transformed and expanded its traditional business model in order to increase its market share, with digitalization at the forefront of this strategy. Industry 4.0 at Kaeser serves as a successful example of how state-of-the-art technology can be implemented in machinery to produce new, lucrative business models.
Siemens has developed a strong digital solution portfolio
In Chengdu, in the heart of China’s southwest, Siemens is another player which operates one of the country’s most advanced factories, alongside Bosch. Like Bosch, in 2018, the World Economic Forum recognized “Siemens Electronic Works Chengdu” (SEWC) as one of the most advanced factories in the world. Noted as an example of the Industry 4.0 concept, this factory demonstrates how to drive innovation with digitalization. In addition to the Chengdu facility’s high levels of automation and quality control, all production processes are digitally recorded. Software is fed with approximately 10 million pieces of data every day, most of it being process information. This is used to manage production processes and ensure quality. It also supports the work of more than one hundred R&D engineers at SEWC who create and improve products for Asian markets.
