Bauxite is the key ore for aluminum production, which is largely used in the transportation, construction, packaging, electrical, machinery equipment and consumer goods industries. Global bauxite production grew to 359.2Mt in 2020. The growth was mainly supported by higher output from the world’s second-largest producer Guinea, with an estimated 25% increase in production in 2020.

The largest bauxite producing companies were found to be Rio Tinto, Alcoa, and Norsk Hydro, which collectively produced 112.7Mt of bauxite in 2020, that was up by 2.5% over the previous year. Rio Tinto is the largest producer, mainly due to the ramp-up from the CBG mine expansion in Guinea, stable performance from the Pacific mine and additional volume from the start-up of the Amrun mine at the end of 2019.

Global bauxite production over the forecast period (2021–2025) is expected to grow at a CAGR of more than 2%, with Guinea, Australia and China being the major contributors to this growth. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, global bauxite production has grown in 2020 mainly due to the contribution of the major producers and importers.

What are the bauxite mining market dynamics?

Bauxite is primarily used for aluminum production, which is used principally in the transportation, construction, packaging, electrical, machinery equipment and consumer goods industries. According to the International Aluminium Institute (IAI), global aluminum production increased by 2.5% over 2019. Meanwhile, global consumption of bauxite grew by 2.8%, over the previous year. The growing activities across the country’s construction industry and supportive regulatory policies are likely to boost aluminum production further, leading to an increase in bauxite demand.

Automotive industry is one of the industries with high demand of Bauxite and was heavily impacted due to COVID-19, with severe disruption in supply logistics, insufficient availability of manpower and a significant drop in demand experienced amid the travel restrictions. During Q1 2021, with recovery from the pandemic and revival in the demand for automobiles, global automobile production rose.

Construction is a key end use market for aluminum, with China, as the largest market with increasing numbers of construction and infrastructure projects that have been driving the demand for iron ore in China. The construction output value is expected to grow by more than 7% in 2021, supported by an increase in the number of construction projects.

What is the categorization of bauxite assets?

Bauxite assets are categorized into active mines, development projects and exploration projects. Each category provides additional information about the mines/projects regarding the mining method, mine stage, total ore reserves, saleable production year, equity owners etc.

What are the top regions and countries for the bauxite mining market?

According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), global bauxite reserves were 30 billion tonnes (bnt) as of January 2021. The majority of these are located in Guinea, which accounted for more than 24% of the global total, followed by Australia, Vietnam, Brazil and Jamaica. The principal minerals in bauxite are gibbsite, boehmite and diaspore. The latter is much denser and harder than boehmite, an aluminum oxide hydroxide. Bauxite occurs mainly in tropical and sub-tropical areas, including Africa, the Caribbean, South America and Australia.

Guinea has been reported as the world’s second-largest producer in 2020. Output rose by more than 25% against 2019, mainly supported by the commencement of the Boffa Bauxite mine in 2020 and a production ramp-up from the Guinea Alumina Corporation (GAC) mine, which is owned by Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) and started operations in 2019. GAC’s bauxite production was 9.5Mt in 2020, compared to 1.7Mt in the previous year. Therefore, the growth will be supported by a number of new bauxite projects, including the Garafiri, along with upcoming projects such as the Bon Ami Project, Koumbia Bauxite Project and Helalin Bauxite Mine, which are expected to be operational by 2022–2023.

Australia holds the world’s second-largest reserves of bauxite, accounting for 20% of the global total as of January 2020. Most of these are found in Western Australia, Queensland, the Northern Territory and Tasmania. China is another major producer, which had a 1% fall in bauxite production in 2020, due to lower reserve quality and the government’s efforts to integrate the aluminum industry to reduce future pollution levels.

Who are the major players in the bauxite mining market?

Rio Tinto, Alcoa, and Norsk Hydro are the top three bauxite producers in the world. Rio Tinto was the largest, with 56.1Mt of production, up by 2% over 2019, mainly driven by the ramp-up from the CBG mine expansion in Guinea, along with stable performance from the Pacific mine and additional volume from the start-up of the Amrun mine at the end of 2019.

US-based Alcoa Corp. (Alcoa), is the second-largest bauxite producer in the world, operating with one of the biggest bauxite mining portfolios, alumina refining networks and energy portfolios in the world.
