Business of Major League Baseball Report Overview
The Major League Baseball (MLB) sponsorship revenue is estimated to be $548 million in 2023 via its portfolio of 31 sponsorships. MLB is still the second most popular sport in the United States in terms of attendance, behind only the NFL in terms of venue attendance. Beverages, technology, and financial services have the highest volume of deals with Major League Baseball, with 15 deals across these sectors in sponsorship revenue annually.
T-Mobile, Budweiser, and Mastercard are the brands spending the most on their partnerships with MLB. The small tweak in the rules of MLB by introducing a pitch clock to games has meant that games are on average 30 mins shorter, meaning an improved experience for both fans in the venue and watching on TV.
The Business of MLB report gives a detailed overview of the commercial landscape from a league perspective. The report also outlines the social media position of the main properties as well as ticketing revenue. It offers a clear breakdown of the sponsorship and media deals linked to the clubs.
Business of MLB Global Broadcasters
The key broadcasting partners of MLB are Apple, NBC, Fox, Turner Sports, and ESPN. One of the biggest developments in the MLB media landscape last year, was the organization’s announced broadcasting deal with Apple. The deal announced in March 2022 allowed Apple to stream ‘Friday Night Baseball’ games to Apple TV+ subscribers and included a Pre- and Post-game show. Although only initially signed on a one-year deal, Apple announced earlier in March that its broadcasting rights had been extended for the 2023 season, continuing on similar rights for ‘Friday Night Baseball’.
This season, Apple will have broadcast rights for 25 weeks of the season, with no local broadcaster restrictions, airing two games on each of these Fridays. This deal is also not limited to the United States, with the content made available to Apple TV+ subscribers in over 60 countries and regions. The video streaming platform YouTube has also come on board as a broadcaster of the league, on a single-season deal last year but unlike Apple were not able to agree to terms to extend the partnership into the 2023 season. The deal had seen the online platform air the ‘MLB Game of the Week Live on YouTube’ feature, with 15 games being shown live and for free on YouTube across 182 countries throughout this season.
