The primary energy supply in Mali is largely based on biomass (78%). It is the main energy source for the majority of the population, while fossil fuels contribute to 21% of the energy supply and hydro contributes 1%. Electricity access rates are low but improving, at 55% in urban and 15% in rural areas. Electricity demand is growing extremely fast (about 10% per year in recent years) driven by domestic consumers and the industrial and mining sectors. The growing demand from the industrial and mining sector is largely met by captive generators that rely exclusively on fossil fuels to satisfy their energy needs. For providing electricity access to rural areas, a decentralized approach is being pursued, allowing private energy services companies to operate.
The nation is highly dependent on thermal and hydropower, which can be unreliable and expensive. The dependence on imported oil to fuel some of the country’s power plants makes the country susceptible to fuel price fluctuations. The changing weather pattern due to global warming and land usage has made hydropower generation highly erratic; hence, the government of Mali has started planning to diversify its power mix, with growing investment in renewables, mainly focused on solar, hydro, wind, and biofuels.
