Poland Power Market Dynamics
Poland’s power demand has been increasing due to economic growth and rising industrial and residential demand. In 2022, thermal power dominated the capacity segment, where its share in total capacity was over 60%. It was followed by renewable power and hydropower. Among the thermal sources, coal-based power plants dominate the generation mix. This is because coal reserves are abundant, which also makes the country a leading exporter of coal worldwide.
The government is aware of the need to alleviate the climate change effects of thermal power generation and is turning towards renewable power generation sources. The country is currently promoting wind, biomass, biogas, and solar photovoltaic (PV) to achieve the 2030 EU targets. In its Energy Strategy 2040 (EPP 2040), the country plans to end its dependence on coal after the Polish government, miners’ unions, and the state-owned coal firm, Polish Mining Group (PGG), agreed on a plan to phase out mines by 2049, which is very late in comparison to other EU nations.
