Vehicle industry in Germany post pandemic
The German car manufacturing industry, which is the largest in Europe, declined in both value and volume terms over the historic period. The industry suffered a particularly steep decline in 2020 amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The industry looks set to recover in the forecast period. Like much of the rest of Europe, car sharing start-ups have dented growth in Germany’s sales, as an increasing number of Germans, especially those belonging to the younger segments of society, opt to share vehicles rather than purchase their own due to financial restraints or environmental reasons. Car2Go, which is owned by Daimler AG, is a prime example of a successful car sharing platform that has cemented its position, especially in the urban centers of Germany.

In 2020, a year overshadowed by Covid-19, many of our employees worked for the common good to help contain the pandemic. Volkswagen South Africa converted a former factory into a hospital. In Spain, SEAT manufactured respiratory equipment. ŠKODA in the Czech Republic and Lamborghini in Italy produced surgical masks and face shields.
The new European Green Deal will increase Volkswagen’s battery requirements in 2030. To achieve the political climate targets, all-electric vehicles will have to make up more than half of the deliveries in Europe – significantly more than previously projected. This also means that in addition to its battery manufacturing facility in Salzgitter, it will need two more battery plants in Europe. Volkswagen is prepared for this – and supports the Green Deal as well as the Paris Climate Agreement.
