Growing health concerns
The health and wellness trend has gained significant recognition among Lithuanian consumers. As a result, an increasing number of consumers are adopting healthier lifestyle choices by opting for healthy and high quality products. This has led to an increase in demand for low alcohol or non-alcoholic beer and cider products. Additionally, there is growing interest in Lithuania towards products which contain natural ingredients and come with gluten free or organic claims. Furthermore, to control consumption of beer and cider, half-liter and smaller bottles are gaining popularity among Lithuanian consumers. These health concerns considerably impacted the consumption of beer and cider in Lithuania.
Rising demand of premium products
Lithuania recorded annual real GDP growth in 2019, which boosted consumer and manufacturer confidence. Furthermore, with net household disposable income rising in 2019, consumers sought premium variants of beer and cider that offered heightened consumption experiences. An emergence of local buyers who were more open in trying out new beer brews fueled the growth of locally brewed craft beers and imported brands. Lithuanian consumers were also willing to pay more for better quality and new flavors, which boosted overall value sales growth in 2019.
Falling population cuts down target market size
Lithuania is a sparsely populated country. In 2019, the country’s population fell and is projected to fall further by 2024. As per Lithuania's Labour Market Research Institute, there has been a notable decline in the working population, as the country tries to stem the flow of people moving to other countries in search of attractive job opportunities. The country was facing decline even in more recent years when the economy did well, leading to a continuous contraction of the target market for beer and cider, making the shrinking population one of the key factors causing a decline in beer and cider sales.
