Wastewater is simply used water that has been contaminated by home, industrial, and commercial activities. The process of treating wastewater to remove contaminants so that it can be returned to the ecosystem is known as wastewater treatment. The treated water, also called effluent, after entering the ecosystem minimizes the impact on the environment and can also be used for various purposes.

Japan is one of the leading countries for wastewater treatment along with the United States, Mexico, China, and Germany among the top five countries. The Japanese wastewater treatment market has been valued at $17,268.1 million in 2021, with 12,842.2 million cubic meters of wastewater treated during the same period. The country’s wastewater treatment market grew at compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) 0f 3.0% between 2017 and 2021, while the underlying market volume grew at a CAGR of 2.7% during the same period.

One of the major concerns for the Japanese government is nuclear wastewater. Currently, the Japanese government treats the wastewater released from nuclear power plants until the contamination level is reduced to at least one-hundredth of its original concentration. However, the neighboring countries including China and South Korea continue to oppose the release of nuclear wastewater into the oceans.
