The population of the world has more than doubled between 1959 and the 2000s. The annual rate of population increase reached its high in the late 1960s. Bhutan has a higher-than-average percentage of rural residents. Since the 1960s, there have always been more people living in the rural parts of Bhutan than there are in the urban areas.
