Global Population: Overview

The entire number of people living in a nation or area is referred to as its population. The economy, female fertility rates, birth rates, mortality rates, healthcare facilities, expanding urbanization, immigration and emigration rates, education, and other social and cultural elements are only a few of the many variables that affect a nation's population growth.

Currently, the global population is growing at a low single-digit annual rate. The population is projected to grow by 81 million people annually. The population of the world has more than doubled between 1959 and the 2000s. The annual rate of population increase reached its high in the late 1960s. The pace of increase has nearly halved since then, and it is anticipated that it will continue to decrease globally in the coming years.

France Population Distribution

The population of France reached 67.5 million in 2021. France had the largest population group with 61.4% (41.5 million) of the population falling into the working-age group of 15-64 years. 65 years and above, was the second-largest population group in France with 20.8% (14 million) of the population. 15 years and below was the third largest population group with 17.8% (12 million) of the total population in 2021.

With a population of 67.4 million people in 2020, France has one of the largest populations in Europe. According to the UN Development Programmer’s 2019 Human Development Index Statistical Update, France was ranked 26th out of 189 countries and was categorized as a ‘very high human development’ nation. France is facing the challenge of ensuring social security for an aging population. France has one of the highest birth rates in Europe, although the birth rate has declined recently.

French society faces the challenge of an aging population. The old-age support ratio (the number of people the working age (15–64) relative to the number the retirement age (65+)) is declining because of increased life expectancy. The old-age dependency ratio (over-65 population as a share of working-age (15 to 64) population) will rise sharply from 37.3% in 2020 to 54.5% by 2050. This will affect the economy, as the working-age population’s contribution to support the non-working will decrease in the future.
