Grain Exports by Ukraine Affected Amid Russia-Ukraine Conflict

  • Grain exports from Ukraine have been severely affected as the ports in the Black Sea basin are no longer functional due to the Russia-Ukraine conflict
  • Owing to the Russia-Ukraine conflict, uncertainties continue to prevail in the global food supplies
  • According to GlobalData, 42% of Ukraine’s wheat exports are to the Middle East and North Africa region.

The export of grains from Ukraine has been severely affected as the ports in the Black Sea basin are no longer functional due to the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Prior to the invasion by Russia, over 98% of Ukraine's grain exports were from the Black Sea ports. However, with the Russian naval blockade, those ports remain inaccessible, and Russian assaults resulted in damaged warehouses, rail yards, and other important export facilities. Despite the conflict, Ukraine is expected to produce over 30 million tonnes of wheat, corn, and other agricultural products this year. Traders and farmers are exploring alternative avenues to export food grains, with the help of the Ukrainian government and neighboring countries, in order to avoid global food shortage.

Alternative Routes

One such alternative is Romania's Black Sea port of Constanta; however, the food grains must be moved over considerable distances by road or rail or be loaded into ships at Ukrainian river ports and delivered down the Danube. Some grains are also due to be transported by rail through Poland and Lithuania. However, the new routes are lengthier and more expensive, and the problem is aggravated by overburdened infrastructure and Russian strikes on bridges and railways.

Impact on Global Economy

The failure to export grains by Ukraine is a problem that affects more than just Ukraine and its farmers. Ukraine's agricultural fields are vital to the world's food supply, with the country ranking among the top ten exporters of wheat, corn, and barley, besides being the largest exporter of sunflower oil. The countries that rely on exports by Ukraine remain affected with many seeking alternative suppliers due to disruption to shipping in the Black Sea and the closure of Ukrainian ports as a result of Russia’s attacks. According to GlobalData, Ukraine exports 42% of its wheat to the Middle East and North Africa region. The Russia-Ukraine conflict led to uncertainty in global food supplies. The prices of grains and oilseeds have increased around the world as several other exporting countries have introduced schemes to reduce exports and increase domestic supply.

The Russian government stated that it might consider relaxing its naval blockade and permitting grain supplies to continue in exchange for the lifting of sanctions. However, the Western countries stated that the sanctions will remain in place. As a result, Ukraine's search for alternative export channels is likely to continue.
