Total Deaths

Total Deaths represent the total number of deaths occurring during a certain period. Similar to how life expectancy is measured, this measures the population's overall health by measuring the rate of deaths from all causes. Death is calculated by dividing the total number of deaths from a disease by the total population.

Total Deaths: Global Scenario

India, China, the United States, Russia, and Nigeria are among the top five countries with the highest number of deaths in the world in 2021. Montserrat, Saint Pierre and Miquelon, Nauru, Saint Helena, Cook Islands, and Anguilla were among the nations with the lowest number of deaths globally in 2021.

According to World Health Organization (WHO), in the 24 months from January 1, 2020, to December 31, 2021, 14.91 million people died worldwide as a result of COVID-19, which is 9.49 million more deaths than were officially recognized as directly linked to COVID-19.

  • Ischemic heart disease: Ischemic heart disease, which accounts for 16% of all deaths worldwide, is the world's leading cause of mortality. This disease has shown the highest increase in deaths since 2000, with an increase of more than 2 million deaths to 8.9 million deaths in 2019
  •  Stroke and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: The second and third most common killers, stroke, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, respectively account for 11% and 6% of all deaths
  • Lower respiratory infections: As the fourth most common cause of death, lower respiratory infections continued to be the most lethal communicable disease around the globe. The number of deaths has decreased significantly, though; in 2019, it claimed 2.6 million lives, 460,000 fewer than it had in 2000
