Australia: Five Largest Underground Copper Mines in 2021

  • Olympic Dam Mine in South Australia, was the largest underground copper-producing mine in Australia, producing approximately 205.3 thousand tonnes of copper and an estimated 8.7 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) in 2021. The Olympic Dam Mine is owned by BHP, and is due to operate until 2061. The second largest underground copper-producing mine with an estimated production of 106.4 thousand tonnes of copper and approximately 32.51 mmtpa of ROM, was the Cadia Mine located in New South Wales. The Cadia Mine is owned by Newcrest Mining Ltd, and is due to operate until 2047.
