Austria: Five Largest Underground Mines in 2021

  • Altaussee Mine in Styria, was the largest underground mine in Austria, producing approximately 0.58 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) in 2021. The Altaussee Mine is owned by Salinen Austria Ag. The second largest underground mine with an estimated 0.48 mmtpa of ROM and primarily producing copper (2.15 thousand tonnes), was the Mittersill Mine located in Salzburg. The Mittersill Mine is owned by Sandvik AB.

  • Waldenstein Micaceous Iron Oxide (MIO) Mine located in Lower Austria was the third-largest mine, the Breitenau Mine located in Lower Austria was the fourth-largest mine, and the Radenthein Mine located in Carinthia was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated ROM production of 0.4 mmtpa, 0.24 mmtpa and 0.05 mmtpa, respectively, in 2021. The Waldenstein Micaceous Iron Oxide (MIO) Mine is owned by Karntner Montanindustrie GmbH, the Breitenau Mine is owned by RHI Magnesita NV and the Radenthein Mine is owned by RHI Magnesita NV.

  • The five largest underground mines, i.e., Altaussee Mine, Mittersill Mine, Waldenstein Micaceous Iron Oxide (MIO) Mine, Breitenau Mine, and Radenthein Mine, cumulatively produced approximately 1.74 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
