Maritsa East Mine in Stara Zagora, was the largest surface mine in Bulgaria, producing approximately 31.69 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) in 2021. The Maritsa East Mine is owned by Bulgarian Energy Holding EAD, and is due to operate until 2089. The second largest surface mine with an estimated 13.9 mmtpa of ROM and primarily producing magnesium (44.47 thousand tonnes), was the Panagurishte Mine located in Pazardzhik. The Panagurishte Mine is owned by Assarel-Medet JSC.
Elatzite Mine located in Sofia was the third-largest mine, the Plovdiv Mine located in Plovdiv was the fourth-largest mine, and the Kardzhali Lead and Zinc Mine located in Kardzhali was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated ROM production of 2.07 mmtpa, 2.05 mmtpa and 2.02 mmtpa, respectively, in 2021. Primarily, the Elatzite Mine produced approximately 22.38 thousand tonnes of copper, the Plovdiv Mine produced approximately 94.02 thousand tonnes of lead, and the Kardzhali Lead and Zinc Mine produced approximately 92.83 thousand tonnes of lead in the year 2021. The Elatzite Mine is owned by Geotechmin Group, the Plovdiv Mine is owned by KCM 2000 Group and the Kardzhali Lead and Zinc Mine is owned by Harmony 2012, Ltd..
The five largest surface mines, i.e., Maritsa East Mine, Panagurishte Mine, Elatzite Mine, Plovdiv Mine, and Kardzhali Lead and Zinc Mine, cumulatively produced approximately 51.73 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
