Burkina Faso: Five Largest Mines in 2021

  • Essakane Gold Mine in Oudalan, was the largest mine in Burkina Faso, producing approximately 15.87 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) and primarily produced gold (465.33 thousand ounces) in 2021. The Essakane Gold Mine is owned by Government of Burkina Faso;Iamgold Corp, and is due to operate until 2027. The second largest mine with approximately 10.76 mmtpa of ROM and primarily producing gold (84.19 thousand ounces), was the Bouly Project located in Kadiogo. The Bouly Project is owned by Government of Burkina Faso;Nord Gold SE, and is due to operate until 2030.

  • Karma Mine located in Yatenga was the third-largest mine, the Hounde Mine located in Tuy was the fourth-largest mine, and the Bissa Mine located in Sanmatenga was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated ROM production of 5.17 mmtpa, 4.81 mmtpa and 4.55 mmtpa, respectively, in 2021. Primarily, the Karma Mine produced approximately 89 thousand ounces of gold, the Hounde Mine produced approximately 287 thousand ounces of gold and the Bissa Mine produced approximately 154 thousand ounces of gold in the year 2021. The Karma Mine is owned by Government of Burkina Faso;Nere Mining which is due to operate until 2025, the Hounde Mine is owned by Government of Burkina Faso;Endeavour Mining Corp which is due to operate until 2032 and the Bissa Mine is owned by Nord Gold SE;Government of Burkina Faso which is due to operate until 2024.

  • The five largest mines, i.e., Essakane Gold Mine, Bouly Project, Karma Mine, Hounde Mine, and Bissa Mine, cumulatively produced approximately 41.17 mmtpa of ROM in 2021
