Nechi Project in Antioquia, was the largest surface mine in Colombia, producing approximately 53.68 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) and primarily produced gold (73.13 thousand ounces) in 2021. The Nechi Project is owned by Mineros SA. The second largest surface mine with an estimated 27.53 mmtpa of ROM, was the Cerrejon Mine located in La Guajira. The Cerrejon Mine is owned by Glencore Plc, and is due to operate until 2035.
El Descanso Mine located in Cesar was the third-largest mine, the La Loma Mine located in Cesar was the fourth-largest mine, and the Calenturitas Mine located in Cesar was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated ROM production of 23.07 mmtpa, 21.29 mmtpa and 8.19 mmtpa, respectively, in 2021. The El Descanso Mine is owned by Itochu Corp;Drummond Co Inc which is due to operate until 2067, the La Loma Mine is owned by Itochu Corp;Drummond Co Inc which is due to operate until 2064 and the Calenturitas Mine is owned by Glencore Plc which is due to operate until 2027.
The five largest surface mines, i.e., Nechi Project, Cerrejon Mine, El Descanso Mine, La Loma Mine, and Calenturitas Mine, cumulatively produced approximately 133.76 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
