Global bauxite production grew by a significant share, supported by higher production from the world’s second-largest producer, Guinea, with an increase in production in 2020. Meanwhile, production from Brazil was reported to have increased and also in Indonesia by a major share. These helped to offset lower output in Australia.
The largest bauxite producing companies are Rio Tinto, Alcoa, and Norsk Hydro.

Bauxite is primarily used for aluminum production, which is used principally in the transportation, construction, packaging, electrical, machinery equipment and consumer goods industries.
Global Bauxite reserves by country
According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), global bauxite reserves had a major share as of January 2021. The majority of these are located in Guinea, which accounted for a major share of the global total, followed by Australia, Vietnam, Brazil and Jamaica.
The principal minerals in bauxite are gibbsite, boehmite and diaspore. The latter is much denser and harder than boehmite, an aluminum oxide hydroxide. Bauxite occurs mainly in tropical and sub-tropical areas, including Africa, the Caribbean, South America and Australia.
US-based Alcoa Corp. (Alcoa) is the second-largest bauxite producer in the world. The company also produces alumina and aluminum. The company operates with one of the biggest bauxite mining portfolios, alumina refining networks and energy portfolios in the world.
The company wholly owns or has stakes in eight active bauxite mines: the Sangaredi mine in Guinea, the Al Baitha mine in Saudi Arabia, the Huntly and Willowdale mines in Australia and the MRN, Juruti Bauxite, Pocos de Caldas and Jabuti mines in Brazil. It produces aluminum ingot, including billet and slab, aluminum derivatives, aluminum powder, specialty alumina and aluminum sheets and plates. The company operates bauxite mining assets, refining facilities, aluminum smelters, cast-houses and rolling mills, as well as energy assets, which provides power to its various facilities.
