The US consumption of coal in 2020 was down as compared to 2019. The country’s power sector accounted for a major share of country’s coal consumption in 2020, followed by the steel industry.
Electricity generation from coal declined in 2020 as compared to the previous year. Although the share of coal in electricity generation was more than half of the total energy production in 2010, it has been on a downward trend since then, owing to government regulations aimed at reducing carbon emissions from fossil-fuelled power plants and an increase in the availability of natural gas due to shale oil exploration and extraction. As the number of coal-fired power plants in operation has fallen and power from renewable sources increased as well as that from natural gas, the share of coal-fired electricity generation declined in 2020.
Meanwhile, coal consumption in other sectors – including coke plants and other industries, such as cement production and primary metal manufacturing – declined in 2020, owing to the temporary shutdown of many business and manufacturing facilities, in order to contain the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Between 2021–2025, the country’s coal consumption is expected to decline by 2025, owing to falling demand for coal from the domestic power industry. The lower demand will be driven by various measures taken by the US government to encourage generation of electricity from sources other than coal, including renewables, with the closure of the Chalk Point, Big Bend, Bridgeport Station, Genoa, North Valmy and AES Petersburg plants, among others.
Consumption of both thermal and coking coal is expected to decline over by 2025.
