Letpadaung Copper Mine in Sagaing, was the largest surface mine in Myanmar, producing approximately 36.92 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) and primarily produced copper (122.95 thousand tonnes) in 2021. The Letpadaung Copper Mine is owned by Wanbao Mining Co Ltd, and is due to operate until 2051. The second largest surface mine with an estimated 21.56 mmtpa of ROM and primarily producing copper (75.69 thousand tonnes), was the Kyisintaung Copper Mine located in Sagaing. The Kyisintaung Copper Mine is owned by Wanbao Mining Co Ltd, and is due to operate until 2028.
Monywa Mine located in Sagaing was the third-largest mine, the Tagaung Taung Mine located in Mandalay was the fourth-largest mine, and the Taungphila Limestone Mountain Quarry located in Naypyidaw was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated ROM production of 13.57 mmtpa, 2.04 mmtpa and 0.69 mmtpa, respectively, in 2021. The Monywa Mine is owned by Mining Enterprise No. 1;The Monywa Trust which is due to operate until 2042, the Tagaung Taung Mine is owned by China Nonferrous Metal Mining (Group) Co Ltd;Taiyuan Iron & Steel (Group) Co Ltd which is due to operate until 2032 and the Taungphila Limestone Mountain Quarry is owned by Myanma Ceramic Industries.
The five largest surface mines, i.e., Letpadaung Copper Mine, Kyisintaung Copper Mine, Monywa Mine, Tagaung Taung Mine, and Taungphila Limestone Mountain Quarry, cumulatively produced approximately 75.48 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
